Press releases can be government secrets, says court

In 2005, the operator of this site was invited to use a media release service launched by the Finnish ministry of the interior. Those user credentials were later revoked. This resulted in an 18-month court battle.

The Finnish supreme administrative court has now found that although the information on the site was public, the ministry was entitled to decide whom to provide access. In short, if the government stores public information on a computer rather than on paper, they can keep it semi-secret, allowing access to their favorite media, keeping inconvenient critics in the dark.
