Yesterday the Helsinki district court fined six animal protection activists for defamation as well as for invasion of domestic premises. The convicted persons had staged anti-fur demonstrations outside the home of Mr. Pekka Halonen, CEO of Veljekset Halonen Oy, a major Finnish clothing store chain.
Meanwhile, charges are being considered against 86 persons who participated in last autumn’s Helsinki anti-ASEM demonstrations. The list of suspects includes Helsinki city councilor Paavo Arhinmäki.
The constitution of Finland nominally allows everyone the right to arrange meetings and demonstrations without a permit, as well as the right to participate in them.
