Finnish website adressit.com carries a petition titled “Susan Kuronen, stop opening up” (freely translated). The self-stated objective of the petition is to “help Susan understand that people certainly feel no sympathy for her”. This petition was publicised on the front page of yesterday’s Ilta-Sanomat afternoon paper, together with several interviews drumming up antipathies against Ms. Kuronen. The petition now carries nearly 25 000 signatures. In January 2008 - eleven months later - there were over 64 000 signatures.
Ms. Kuronen is a former lady friend of Finnish prime minister Matti Vanhanen. After their relationship crashed, she has spoken about it openly. She is also currently in the process of writing a book titled “The prime minister’s bride” (again, freely translated).
Although it probably is safe to assume that many of the petition signatories are party apparatchiks concerned about the image of their Beloved Leader, there are nevertheless almost 25 000 over 64 000 persons who should be ashamed of publicly picking on a single mother of three.

Susan Kuronen is not an innocent, mistreated single mother. She wanted to become famous as a woman Finish Prime Minister loved. Famous she has become, alright, but at the same time she has gained the questionable position of the most despised woman in the country. Finnish people value the sanctity of private life. We do not like people who stab their friends, even former friends, at the back. The book Kuronen wrote about their short affair, is selling very badly indeed. Susan Kuronen wanted fame and fortune. She has become well known, but her dreams about money have vanished.
In a couple of more weeks she will be forgotten, I hope and pray.
