The conviction in the Connecticut, USA risk of injury to a minor case I wrote about earlier has been overturned, and a new trial ordered. The defense is reported to have commented as follows:
The lesson from this is we are all at the whims of these computers.
What utter nonsense. The teacher could have pulled the plug, she could have shut down the monitor, she could have evacuated the class.
Perhaps the same logic should apply to road traffic accidents as well? “Your Honor, my client the driver could do nothing to prevent running over those kids with her car. Remember, we are all at the whims of these automobiles.”
