Welcome to the revamped news.newusers.questions web site!

I recently mentioned that the web site for the newsgroup news.newusers.questions (nnq) would be moving to a new home. Well, that site is now live, so please update your links and bookmarks.

Changes include:

  • No mirror sites. The site is hosted on a commercial-grade service. There should be very little downtime, and no performance issues.
  • New looks. The old sites were not heavy on presentation gimmicks, and neither is the new one. However, CSS is used to suggest a style intended to be pleasant and easy to read. The site should adapt to different browsing environments, including smartphones and PDAs, as well as possible.
  • Less advertising. There are no more page-size banner ads nor any interstitial pages. The only advertisement is now one reasonably-sized banner at the top of each page. Wherever possible, the banner will feature products relevant to the topic of the individual page.
  • Updated content. This task is still underway, but significant updates have already taken place.
    • I am trying to edit the articles towards a common terminology and style, so that they will be easily understandable as a whole.
    • Some topics have been discussed on several pages, by different authors; in such cases I try to improve on one location, while replacing the others with hyperlinks to that page.
    • Lots of information regarding e.g. groups and hierarchies has been updated.

I hope you’ll use and enjoy the new nnq site. Any and all feedback is welcome; please post it to the newsgroup.

A participant asked whether the newsgroup is being replaced by a web site. Absolutely not! The moderation board wants everyone to be able to continue reading nnq, and posting to nnq. The role of the web site is to support the newsgroup, just as before.

Coming up: we are replacing Robbie, the presby.edu moderation robot, with a new one. Consequently, I expect to shortly announce (in nnq) some technical changes in how nnq is moderated. Posting should not be affected.
