I have chosen my favourite between the stuff I saw at the FinnSec trade show this week. The winner is… a smoke detector. Anticlimax? No, for the Fidepro “intelligent smoke alarm” is something special.
Wired to your electric control panel, the device reacts to smoke not only by giving off an audible alarm — additionally it simulates a fault current, causing your ground fault interrupter to pop. That means no more electricity supply to the stove you forgot to turn off, the iron that fell into your laundry basket, or whatever your pet electric fire hazard is. With some luck, you will have prevented a fire from destroying your home.
Using an adaptor, you can also connect the Fidepro device to your security alarm, much like any other smoke detector.
The retail price for the Fidepro smoke alarm is approximately EUR 150. Of course, you will need an electrician to install it. In addition, your building must be equipped with fault current protection.
Do you have experience with this type of smoke alarms, or with incidents in which such a device would — or would not — have been useful? Please post your comments!

Fidepro intelligent smoke alarm is the only of it’s kind. It uses the existing mains wiring of the house, so there’s no need to put any more wires in fitting it. I have this system in my house. It took 3 hours work from an electrician to put 4 units. My insurance company gave great discount for having Fidepro- I’ll get the system free of charge within 6 years. I think every house should have the same protection.
Would the same effect not be achieved easily by using detectors wired from a conventional fire alarm control panel?
Where this is a good fail safe in cutting of the electricity current, I am not sure that current advanced fire alarm systems with early warning would equally provide enough time and warning itself.
