Formula 1 loads FICIX to the verge of 20 Gbps

Maybe you have noticed how quiet the streets tend to become when users gather in front of their TV sets en masse.

Similarly network operators are used to see Internet traffic decline during e.g. top sports events. However, thanks to IP television, these days now seem to be over; ITviikko.fi reports (in Finnish) that during last Sunday’s Formula 1 event, where Kimi Räikkönen took home a surprise championship, FICIX throughput hit a new record of 19,7 Gbps. (Traces of the record can be seen in the FICIX stats page averages.)

FICIX, short for Finnish Communication and Internet Exchange association, is the prime IP exchange point in Finland. In view of this, and considering that ADSL2+ connections capable of download rates up to 24 Mbps are commonly available, the record mentioned above suddenly appears not that much. There’s certainly more to come.
