Non-US members are denied their Windows Live™ Search Club rewards

Microsoft logoThe Microsoft® (Nasdaq: MSFT) series of Live services, such as Live Mail (previously Hotmail®) and Live Messenger (previously MSN® Messenger), also includes the Search Club. The following is from an advertisement emailed to a .fi address:

Play free games. Collect tickets. Win prizes or give to a cause.
In the middle of your busy day, take a little “fun break.” From crossword puzzles and word games to trivia teasers, there are lots of chances to partake in a little brain candy and earn tickets along the way.

Then, double the fun when you turn those tickets in for goodies like gift cards, Xbox consoles and accessories, Zune media players, and a lot more. Or you can decide to give tickets earned to charity.

So what are you waiting for?
Check out Live Search Club and join the fun today!

…and this is from a welcome message sent to a user whose Windows Live profile indicates that he lives in Finland:

Win cool prizes
Perhaps the hardest part of being a Live Search Club member is deciding how to spend your fun-earned tickets. Whether your style is about immediate gratification or saving for “big ticket” items, enjoy the chance to win goodies like gift cards, Xbox consoles and accessories, Zune media players, plus so much more.

Apparently anyone, anywhere in the world, may receive these ads in their email. Consistently, apparently anyone may use the service by logging in with their Windows Live username and password, regardless of in which country that username is based. Hardly a surprise - after all, Microsoft is a global company, with Live Mail and Live Messenger users in probably almost every country.

Everything’s perfect, huh? Time for the catch! The EULA on the web site states:

Rewards will be mailed to the U.S. mailing address or e-mail address you provide when you order your Reward. No Rewards will be shipped to destinations outside the United States.

So much for the millions and millions of Live Search users in approximately 190 other countries.

One more nail of badwill in the Microsoft coffin – or what’s your opinion? Please post your comments!
