Finland’s minister of communications, Suvi Lindén, has enjoined Teliasonera (OMXH: TLS1V), a major Nordic telco, to explain how it will provide telecommunications to customers who will lose their landline phones.
Teliasonera has earlier declared that it will dismantle its countryside landline networks. However, as Teliasonera has been assigned universal service operator status, it has a legal obligation to provide faultless telecommunications, either wired or wireless, at a reasonable price.
In a disquisition subsequent to Teliasonera’s decision, permanent secretary Harri Pursiainen drew up a list of conditions Teliasonera should satisfy before terminating any landline subscription. These conditions pertained to, among others, coverage, power supply, emergency calls, special needs, and broadband speed.
Minister Lindén is now asking Teliasonera for a written commitment to the Pursiainen list. The ministry also intends to make changes to Teliasonera’s current licences.
