Severe defects in electric devices

Safety Technology Authority logoDuring the year 2007, Finland’s Safety Technology Authority (Tukes) found safety-endangering defects in 300 electric devices. 67 of these flaws were classified as severe.

Appliances that may cause electrocution and fire include some DVD players, car heaters, extension cords, and LED lamps. 88 products were banned from the market. In 19 cases, the importer was ordered to recall sold products.

Rubber cables that do not endure cold temperatures, but are sold for outdoor use, are one example of electrical hazard. In a sub-zero environment, such cables may break, exposing potentially live wires. The agency therefore recommends that consumers who use outdoor cables examine them carefully for breakage.
