Nokia Maps crashing? A survival story

image of Nokia E90 CommunicatorEarlier today, while I was navigating along using Nokia Maps on my E90, the application froze. I restarted the phone, but Nokia Maps crashed as soon as I launched it. Next, I removed the battery, effectively cold-starting the phone, but the problem continued.

Calling Nokia for support was not as option—I had sent them another support request sometimes last winter, and it still has not been resolved. (Several months ago, a first-level support girl said she would escalate that question to a “technical” person, but that apparently was the last I was to ever hear regarding that issue. I have even specifically asked Nokia when they expect to answer me, but apparently the “technical” persons are closely linked to the null device.)

Back to my malfunctioning Nokia Maps. After browsing around a little using the file manager tool, I found a directory by the name of E:\cities\diskcache. I recursively removed that directory, restarted Nokia Maps, and behold: all was well again, except for the fact that start-up was slower than usual. I could happily continue navigating.

Hopefully this little trick—which comes with no warranties, express or implied—will help someone to quickly resolve a similar problem. After all, who wants to spend the rest of the phone’s working life waiting to hear from an apparently fictitious Nokia tech.

As always, your comments are welcome—please post!
