Plaxo, the social network site built around its networked, automatically updating address book service, has announced that it is being acquired by Comcast.
According to Plaxo, its brand and operations will still remain independent, its basic service free, and its privacy policy in effect. However, judging from comments posted to Plaxo’s official blog, a majority of Plaxo users are skeptical about Plaxo’s future as a Comcast subsidiary.
How is this positive at all? Plaxo is getting absorbed by a big comms player. Imagine how people feel if Microsoft subsumed Facebook.
——— I see absolutely no fit whatsoever between Plaxo and Comcast. Comcast is a regional cable network operator in one country ———. Plaxo is a global service provider, trying to capture a global service market. ——— Comcast doesn’t open any doors in Europe or Asia. It’s (sic) internal procedures are geared towards selling cable subscriptions, not to supporting advertising space in a very specific market (sic).
Yours truly intends to stick around as a Plaxo user though, hoping for the best. I really do not ask for much—Plaxo’s social networking features are completely uninteresting to me, as I prefer LinkedIn for that kind of usage. What I do want to use Plaxo for is their fundamental address book service.
