ICANN proposes that single-character second level domain names should be auctioned off in order to fund areas of public good for the Internet community. Single-character domain names are presently reserved in all 16 generic top level domain registry agreements.
The allocation of single-character names is likely to generate significant revenue. Funds realized as a result of the auction could be used to improve Internet long-term security, stability and accessibility, as well as in other areas of public good of the Internet community.
The auctions would be implemented by Power Auctions LLC, an auction provider based—as ICANN is—in the United States of America.
Through 13 July 2008, ICANN invites public comments on its single-character second-level domain name allocation framework. What do you think? Please also post your comments here!

Power Auctions is doing it right. First Come - First Served is not fair for the community.
The prices will be high: 50 Mio for e.com says onecharacterdomains.com - madness!
