The following advice comes courtesy of Elisa Corporation (OMXH: ELI1V), a Finnish telecommunications company.
- Although mobile phone usage is cheap in Finland, telephone calls and text messages may be much more expensive in other countries.
- The same holds true for data transfer, such as reading web pages or email. You may have a fixed-price monthly data plan in Finland, but abroad you will still be charged the potentially high prices of the local operator in the country you visit. One way to lower costs is to disable automatic email download, and to instead choose only important messages, retrieving them manually.
- Broadband modems are sensitive to lightning. Consider unplugging your modem when thunderstorms approach, as well as whenever you leave your home for an extended time. If you use a VoIP service over your wired broadband connection, remember that you will not be able to place or receive calls while your modem is unplugged (or burnt out by lightning—Thor).
