Can you tell a text-based chat protocol from a social networking website?

A recent event has brought IRC into the spotlight in an undeserved way, as Mr. Matti Saari is said to have uploaded new images to IRC only hours before the shooting.

However, it is obvious that the authors of the above-mentioned news stories actually mean IRC-Galleria, a social networking website. (Many writers have got this aspect quite right.)

IRC, on the other hand, is a text-only medium with no file storage facility. IRC constitutes a protocol of its own; it is not part of the web.

Most IRC-Galleria users probably have nothing to do with IRC, which therefore should not be dragged into the issue. Getting the two mixed up is an indication of extreme bogosity on the part of the writer — or what do you think? Please post your comments!
