Deal with those unwanted calls — five stars for Advanced Call Manager

If you ever receive mobile phone calls you would prefer to avoid, this story is for you. I am going to recommend a wonderful little piece of Symbian software: Advanced Call Manager, by WebGate JSC of Bulgaria.

ACM automatically handles those calls you do not want to take yourself. It can take any of the following actions:

  • Send a busy tone
  • Reply over SMS
  • Divert the call to another number
  • Mute the ringer
  • On Nokia devices: send a personalized greeting and take a voicemail message

These actions can also be defined on a caller-by-caller basis. For example, during a meeting, you might have ACM just mute the ringer for your boss, but send your girlfriend to the voicemail facility.

At least for me, this software would be worth its price (EUR 10–30, depending on where purchased) even if calls from unknown numbers were the only case it could handle. However, you can use also other conditions to trigger a reject action. ACM can accept all calls, reject all calls, accept only calls from numbers in your phonebook, reject callers on your blacklist or accept only callers who are on your white list.

Configurations can be saved as profiles. They, in turn, can be recalled manually, but also according to a schedule as well as based on your location. This is a great feature; you can set ACM to recognize a particular cell (or set of cells) as, for instance, home or work, and have a suitable profile activate accordingly.

Unlike many other Symbian applications published by not-very-well-known companies, ACM has proved reliable and stable. In addition, the user interface also looks good. The current version is 2.71, so it is obvious that WebGate maintains the software actively. There is room for enhancements — for example, the scheduler and locator could be much more powerful. If I understand correctly, WebGate is quite open to customer feedback, so I hope to see even better versions in the near future.

The product, including a free trial version, is available at http://www.webgate.bg/products/acm/.
