VeriSign to provide safety lock for com and net domains?

VeriSign has submitted for ICANN review a proposal describing an EPP-based “Registry Lock Service” intended for com and net sub-domains.

If implemented, the service would allow registrars to prevent unauthorized domain deletion, domain transfer, domain update, host deletion, host renaming and host IP address update. Such changes could only be performed manually, through a special process involving VeriSign securely authenticating the registrar contact.

VeriSign intends to provide the “Registry Lock Service” as a value-added service to brand management registrars as well as to other registrars serving customers with high-visibility domain names. An example price of USD 100 (approximately EUR 71) per domain per year has been mentioned.

EPP is described in RFCs 4930–4934. VeriSign’s request for review is available at http://www.icann.org/registries/rsep/verisign-reglock-request-25jun09.pdf. Various other registries operating smaller top-level domains have previously implemented similar services.
