CCTV footage of Turku hospital fire

Finland’s Safety Investigation Authority has published this CCTV recording showing the early stages of the fire that occurred on 2 September 2011 at the Turku University Hospital emergency room. The fire likely started because a component of the nurse call system overheated in the presence of leaked oxygen.

At 5.44.29 on the recording (the CCTV timestamps are some four minutes early), a security guard responds to an unspecified call from the emergency room. At 5.45.16, the fire alarm goes off. The video shows the emergency room staff evacuating the patients and how the premises are filled with smoke within a few minutes.

The interim report by the Safety Investigation Authority is available (only in Finnish) at http://www.onnettomuustutkinta.fi/Etusivu/1324021812791.
