Minister council to target computer crime

Finland’s council of ministers in charge of preparing an internal security program for the years 2008-2011 have today decided to place special focus on internetworking crime. This resolution is based on CERT-FI findings that network attacks are exploding. As an example, the year 2002 saw 34 reports regarding malware, whereas during Q1-2/2007 CERT- FI had already received over 1000 such reports.

The council, which comprises five ministers and five consultants, had already in August 2007, in its initial program statement, predicted that organized crime will exploit internetworking crime opportunities more and more efficiently.

The program’s concrete outcomes do, of course, remain to be seen. Hopefully the esteemed council will be able to steer clear of what might perhaps be called “cybergun control” - knee-jerk reactions that erode individual autonomy and privacy without significantly hindering crime.

What do you see as the top priorities for fighting crime in the next few years? Please leave your comment!
