The smoke alarm that unplugs the fire

I have chosen my favourite between the stuff I saw at the Finnsec trade show this week. The winner is… a smoke detector. Anticlimax, huh? No, for the Fidepro “intelligent smoke alarm” is something special.

Wired to your electric control panel, the device reacts to smoke not only by giving off an audible alarm - additionally it simulates a fault current, causing your ground fault interrupter to pop. That means no more electricity supply to the stove you forgot to turn off, the iron that fell into your laundry basket, or whatever your pet electric fire hazard is. With some luck, you will have prevented a fire from destroying your home.

Using an adaptor, you can also connect the Fidepro device to your security alarm, much like any other smoke detector.

The retail price for the Fidepro smoke alarm is approximately 150 €. Of course you’ll need an electrician to install it. Also, your building must be equipped with fault current protection in the first place.

Do you have experience with this type of smoke alarms, or with incidents where a device such as this one would - or would not - have been useful? Please post your comments!
