ICANN wants one-character domains

ICANN proposes that single-character second level domain names should be auctioned off in order to fund areas of public good for the Internet community. Single-character domain names are presently reserved in all 16 generic top level domain registry agreements.

Protocol fields as advertising space

Today, 1 April 2008, the IETF published RFC 5241, “Naming Rights in IETF Protocols”. Authored by Aaron Falk and Scott Bradner, of BBN Technologies and Harvard University, respectively, the document proposes protocol field naming rights as a new revenue source for the IETF.
